Let x be horizontal distance, h be vertical distance \[\tan 65 = \frac{h}{x}\] \[\tan 40 = \frac{h}{x+290}\] solve each for h, then set them equal to each other \[x \tan 65 = (x+290) \tan 40\] \[x = \frac{290 \tan 40}{\tan 65 - \tan 40}\]
