Greg joins three magnetic sticks having unequal lengths to make a triangle, as shown below. What is most likely the length of the third stick?

Do you know the angles between them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A 6 B 7 C 8 D 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its doesnt say

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are these A 6 B 7 C 8 D 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The possible answers

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

what do u think it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well 6 is the smallest one so thats what i think it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The thing here is that, i think we need at least 1 angle. Reason being that the 3 and 4 stick can be separated by angles between 0 and 180 degrees. which will need different lenght of stick to connect both of them

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

I'd say 6 too because according to Pythagoras' theorem, the 3rd side would have been 5 if the angle at the top right was 90 degrees... but we don't know that angle... so approximately we can say 6 is the answer. besides the question is asking for what the answer will MOST LIKELY be. I'll go for 6

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

we don't have to solve for this, we just have to find what the angle will most likely be, i suppose we're supposed to use intuition to answer this question :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From looking at the picture. The triangle looks almost like right angle triangle so i did say 6 is the best answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yeah thats what i thought too just making sure ! thanks guys !:D

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

anytime :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your welcome. This was a really good question.

Thanks !(:
