Explain why building canals became popular in the United States after 1825

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The turnpike system was very slow and there was a lack of cargo because there was a limit on what could be moved because of the tough conditions and because there was a limit to what horses could carry. the canals became popular (especially the Erie Canal) because they increased cargo. this happened because there was less resistance on water than there was on land. canals became popular because they helped connect the agricultural Northwest to the industrialized East,

Because canals are AWESOME!
