Which of the following could be controversal? Choices are: A. a recipe for blueberry muffins B. casting the lead in a play C. new basketball equipment
Which do you think?
b.
Yup.
I dunno, couldn't the purchase of new basketball equipment be controversial? What if the coach wants something that the school doesn't want to spring for? What if the baseball coach wants money that would be spent on basketball equipment to be spent on baseball equipment instead?
That's true but I think a bigger fight could be caused over a leas role in a play. If a team is getting new equipment, that's something to be happy about. Keep in mind also that the answer only mentions one team. Bringing extra things in will only cause confusion.
I'm just wondering whether the student is meant to select more than one answer? That wasn't clear from the question, not to me at any rate. I agree that casting the lead in a play would be inherently fraught with controversy. Perhaps I was reading too much into the equipment purchase. On the other hand, so much of what we do, any action we take, is apt to be controversial. How much in life is not? I'm wondering whether that's the point too of this question, within its own context.
:) Are you usually told that you over-analyze things. [Totally agree with you by the way.]
Er, well, yes. :) But it is difficult to tell with this question, taken out of context as it is. I felt uneasy not raising that possibility with the questioner. Depends on what the worksheet instructions say. If there's to be only one answer for each question, then, yes, clearly the contentious item is casting the lead for the play. But we don't know what the teacher has in mind, and how she's presented this material. A muffin recipe is pretty darn uncontroversial, but it could be that the point the teacher intends to make is how most everything we do is controversial, how few things are not. Maybe she wants to raise this spectre of possibility here as well, in this selection of items, with item C. Maybe she wants to illustrate how difficult it is to come up with actions that do *not* invite controversy of one sort or another. I think we can't know for certain without seeing the instructions for the questions. But, at any rate, it looks as though you and I are the only ones here having this discussion. Our questioner has moved on . . . so clearly she's satisfied.
I think blueberry muffins could because there are different recipes for them and theres really not a specific way to cook blueberry muffins I hope that helps.:)
