Without writing them all out, what is the number of subsets of set B = {10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24}?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i always gotta count them out; i know theres a trick with 2^ something + something else; but i never remember it lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

set of 0 {} sets of 1 = 8 sets of 2s = 7+6+5+4+3+2 after that it gets messy

OpenStudy (amistre64):

sets of 8: 1 sets of 7: 8 sets of 6: .... this things going to be the binomials of row 8 isnt it ....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1 11 121 1331 14641 15101051 1 6 15 20 15 6 1 1 7 21 35 35 21 7 1 1 8 28 56 70 1 8 28 56 ------------ 2 16 56 112 70 18 56 112 70 74 70 112 144 112 256 maybe lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

wow!! I was actually right on that

Directrix (directrix):

The number of subsets of a given set of n elements is 2^n because an element is either in the set or not in the set. For this example, 2^8 = 256. That includes the entire set and the empty set. I agree with the poster above: When in doubt, count them out, and get the number.
