Whats the difference between a square matrix and a nxn matrix?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seems to me that both are the same....if the number of rows equal the columns the matrix will be square....but my book uses square matrix and nxn matrix in different times such as in theorems.

OpenStudy (chriss):

An n x n matrix is indeed a square matrix for the reason you gave. Sometimes the terms are used interchangedly and I believe it is done intentionally in some cases simply to drive the point that they are the same thing. Perhaps even to ensure the students pick up on the fact that they are the same.
