What is a creation myth ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A mythical story that all cultures use to explain how they were created... Whether a culture believes that gods were fighting each other and there was an explosion and that explosion made the earth, or if they believe that one god created humans, another god breathed life into them, another taught them how to work, etc...

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

The book of Genesis in the Old Testament is a very common example of a creation myth and follows many of the same motifs that you find in creation myths from other cultures. For example, the Genesis states that Adam was made out of dirt or clay. The Shilluks, Hawaiians, the Blackfoot Indians, the Kato tribe, and many other cultures and religions have creation myths where mankind was created from dirt or clay and there are many other correlations other than this. But as PTAsarah said, a creation myth is a story that explains how everything came into being despite the culture that originated the myth.
