Solve: x2 - 20x + 36 = 0

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Do you know how to find the roots of the quadratic, that is, the solutions?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x^2-20x+36 x^2-18x-2x+36 ... Note: -18 and -2 multiply to 36 and add to -20 (x^2-18x)+(-2x+36) x(x-18)+(-2x+36) x(x-18)-2(x-18) (x-2)(x-18) So x^2-20x+36 completely factors to (x-2)(x-18)

OpenStudy (jamesj):

If the roots are a and b, then this quadratic factorizes as \[ (x-a)(x-b) \]
