you're looking at a top view of the pipe being carried through the hallway. when they say horizontally they mean the pole is parallel to the floor. Notice that if the pole is very long, you wouldn't be able to "make the corner" turn. The question is asking what is the longest the pole can be so that you can still "make the corner".
