4x2 – 4x – 48 Factor out 4: 4(x^2 - x - 12) Find two numbers that multiply to get -12 and add to get -1. In this case -4, 3 works: Split the middle term, -x, of the trinomial into two terms using those two numbers: 4(x^2 - 4x + 3x - 12) Factor by grouping: 4(x(x-4)+3(x-4)) Factor out x-4: 4((x-4)(x+3)) Write the final form: 4(x-4)(x+3)
