I am glad they consolidated by closing the side groups - but I have thought for some time that subgroups, category clouds or some other method of organizing questions by subject (and/or academic level) within a group would lend order and coherence and help both askers and answerers use the site efficiently. Having said that, the devil is in the details of coming up with a way to design and implement such a change.
