How do you private message people on this? I've seen others do it to me, and it comes up orangey-looking, but I don't know how to do it back :)

Those are not actually private messages, as we don't have private messaging. What you're probably thinking of are @ mentions. So, I can type @gandalfwiz and it will highlight and send you a notification about this message.
