I think this might be referring to innate immunity, which is protection from infection / foriegn cells by processes that are already present, as opposed to cells of the adaptive immune system. These could be things like the lytic enzyme lysozyme in tears to help keep the eyes free of infection. Other examples include inflammation, so mast cells have a role to play in this process.
