Why are producers important to energy transfer within an ecosystem?

OpenStudy (liliakarina):

Producers take energy from the Sun and transform it into organic molecules rich in carbohydrates, lipids and sugars. Main producers in aquatic ecosystems are algae and in terrestrial ecosystems - plants.

xactly, but the ecosystem does not stop in plants. they are producers but they are eaten by herbivores, the next trophic level and carnivores eat these..until it stops with the organism at the top of the scale which as we can see, depends completely on the lower levels.
