During a race, a driver accelerates 10 feet/second2 for 3 seconds to pass another car. The driver's initial speed was 264 feet/second. The driver's average speed during the 3 seconds of acceleration to the nearest foot per second was ______ feet/second.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

About 279 fps. Our base speed is 264 fps. On top of that, we accelerate at the constant rate of 10 ft/sec^2 for 3 sec, to gain 30 fps by the end. The average of the increased speed is 15 fps (zero speed gained at t=0, 30 gained at t=3, constant acceleration), so our average speed for the three second period is 264 + 15 = 279 fps.
