hello, i just did a math problem that i had to name the equivalent fractions for the nums 2/11 and got the answer 11/2. is this right? HELP!!!

OpenStudy (phi):

no, not correct. you can get equivalent fractions by multiplying (or dividing if you can) the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) by the same number. For example \[ \frac{2}{11}= \frac{4}{22} \] (multiplied top and bottom by 2) One way to know 2/11 cannot be a similar fraction: 11/2 is the same as 5.5 (5 and 1/2) 2/11 is less than 1. so there is no way for those two numbers to be the same. On the other hand, if you divide a pie in half and take one piece (1/2) that is the same as dividing the pie into 4 = pieces and taking 2 pieces (2/4) different fraction, but the same number.
