How did most Americans in the 1800s feel about owning property? Answer Most Americans felt farming was a very difficult lifestyle and preferred to learn trades instead. The responsibility of owning property was not worth the pride of ownership for most Americans. Most Americans preferred to farm property owned by the government rather than pay property taxes. Owning property was very important and was a goal of most Americans during that time period.
