Factor x^3+(x-y)^3

OpenStudy (callisto):

use the formula (x^3-y^3) = (x-y)(x^2 + xy +y^2) x^3+(x-y)^3 = [x-(x-y)][x^2 + x(x-y) + (x-y)^2] = y (x^2 + x^2 -xy +x^2 -2xy +y^2) = y (3x^2 - 3xy + y^2)

But in the back of the book it says that the correct answer is (2x-y)(x^2-xy+y^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i have no idea how they got that because that wont equal to x^3 :/

OpenStudy (callisto):

nahh.. i thought it was a '-' ...

OpenStudy (callisto):

once again use the formula (x^3+y^3) = (x+y)(x^2 - xy +y^2) x^3+(x-y)^3 = [x+(x-y)][x^2 -x(x-y) + (x-y)^2] = (2x-y) (x^2 - x^2 +xy +x^2 -2xy +y^2) = (2x-y) (x^2 - xy + y^2)

OpenStudy (callisto):

sorry :(
