3.285 rounded to the nearest hundredth

myininaya (myininaya):

What digit is in the hundredth's spot ? Do you know? It is okay if you don't...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the 8

myininaya (myininaya):

right! :) So the digits in the thousandths spot will tell you to round that number up or leave it the same

myininaya (myininaya):

Since the number in the thousandths spot is 5 or greater then we round 8 to 9

myininaya (myininaya):

3.29 like this :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank u!! :)

Sometimes, the convention is to round up if it is exactly half way. I've also seen the convention that you round to the even digit; in this case, it would be 3.28. The rationale for the latter method is to minimize the cumulative effects of always rounding up.
