Write the equation of the parabola in vertex form: Vertex: (0,3) that goes through the point (-4,-45)

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Equation of a parabola with vertex (h,k) \[y=a(x-h)^2+k\] here vertex is (0, 3) so \[y=a(x)^2+3\] Now we need to find a, it's given that the parabola passes through(-4, -45) . Substitute x=-4 and y=-45 \[-45=a(-4)^2+3\] subtract 3 from both sides \[-48=a(16)\] Divid both sides by 16 \[-3=a\] So a=-3, The equation of parabola with vertex (0,3) is \[y=-3(x)^2+3\]

Thanks so much ash! :)

The part easily missed is "a" : y = a( x -h)^2 + k
