They attempted to prove that there was an "aether" or medium nessecary for light to travel. To do this, they tried splitting a beam of light into two perpendicular beams and then re-combining them to measure the interference. The interference given a different angle to the movement of the light's medium, should have produced a barely detectible difference in the results of one beam versus the other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelson%E2%80%93Morley_experiment
