I'm thinking they have given you some general guidelines for the relationship between a function and its first derivative. If the function is increasing, then the first derivative is positive. If the function is decreasing then the first derivative is negative. Does any of that sound familiar?

yes I am just confused because the book gives points to plug in in all of its examples but the problems to work are not like that there are 6 graphs like this I have to do

If the function has a maximum or minimum then the first derivative is 0.
