OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

first get the hypotenuse of the smallest triangle..it's sqrt(4^2 + 6^2) = sqrt(16 + 36) = sqrt(52) =2 sqrt 13 that becomes one side of the biggest triangle.. next, get the other leg of the biggest triangle... it is equal to sqrt [(4+x)^2 - (2 sqrt 13)^2) = sqrt [16 + 8x + x^2 - 52] = sqrt [x^2 + 8x - 36] that is the hypotenuse of the second biggest triangle... to get x...use pythagorean theorem c^2 = a^2 + b^2 x^2 + 8x -36 = x^2 + 36 8x = 72 x = 9 sorry...i dunno how to explain it in a very simple way coz the problem is complicated. hope you unerstood my explanation :D

i understand sorta. lol thank you(: what does ^ stand for though?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

exponent...for example x^2 means x squared
