Can someone help me plzplzplz? Wut's the difference between these two problems? 1) Basketball: In how many ways can 5 basketball players be placed in 3 positions: forward, center, and guard? 2) Pizza: How many 3-topping pizzas are possible given 8 different toppings? What's the difference between these two, and also, what are the answers to both of them?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The difference is that in the case of the bb players, the order matters because the positions are different. In the case of the pizza toppings, the order does not matter.

OpenStudy (lilai3):

that's the only difference rite?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

BB: 5(4)(3) PT (8)(7)(6)/3!

OpenStudy (lilai3):

but how can you tell the difference.. for example: on the test it gives u 2 problems and u can't identify which is the combination and which is the permutation.. how can you tell the difference?

OpenStudy (lilai3):

how can you also tell that which problem needs dividing and which doesn't? that's wut i'm confused about

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You have to think whether the order matters or not. If you are choosing a committee, the order doesn't matter because the positions are all equivalent but if you are electing officers, it does because the president is different from the vice president.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The one that needs dividing is when the order doesn't matter because you are dividing out the duplicates.

OpenStudy (lilai3):

oh thanks yous sos muchs!!!!!!!!!!!!(s)
