Find the range if y = 3x + 12 for x = {0.4, 0.6, 1.8, 2.2}. A. {1.2, 1.8, 5.4, 6.6} B. {13.2, 13.8, 17.4, 18.6} C. {12.4, 12.6, 13.8, 14.2}

OpenStudy (chriss):

All you have to do here is plug those values in for x and choose the choice that matches up to the answers you get. i.e the first one is y=3(0.4)+12 1.2+12 13.2 With this being a multiple choice problem, that really should be enough to get your answer based on the choices you have, but it's always a good idea to go ahead and check them all to make sure all the domain inputs give you the listed range outputs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So can you show me step by step and than show me the answer?

OpenStudy (chriss):

Well let's have you try the second one. The second value you have for x is 0.6 and your function is 3x+12 Try plugging 0.6 in for x and see what value you get. Hint: the values you were given for x, x = {0.4, 0.6, 1.8, 2.2} are your domain. The answers you get by plugging those numbers in are your range.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

... :/ ?

OpenStudy (chriss):

So your function is y=3x+12 Your first input is 0.4 which I did for you. y=3(0.4)+12 see how I placed the 0.4 in place of x and then solved the problem? 3*0.4 is 1.2 1.2+12 is 13.2 So the first number in our range is 13.2 So if we take the same function 3x+12 and we replace x with 0.6, what do we get?

OpenStudy (chriss):

Or we could break it down a little more. What is 3*0.6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.8

OpenStudy (chriss):

And if we add 12 to that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13.8

OpenStudy (chriss):

And that is the second number of our range. Now we have established the first two numbers so we have {13.2, 13.8, ?, ?} So we just need the final two. The next x value we have to work with is 1.8 What do we get when we plug that into 3x+12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well you narrowed it down, and i already have the answer. Thank you.

OpenStudy (chriss):

You're welcome.
