xxfreshboy is correct, Spain wanted to find a spice route and ended up finding a potential source of gold instead. They were also ruthless conquerors. The natives that they encountered had never seen horses, guns, or steel before which gave them a massive edge. Technologically, to them, it was like watching aliens land on Earth for the first time. One big example of this is what happened to the Aztec Empire. Cortes landed with 500 men and managed to conquer an empire of millions, though he also forged alliances with the Aztec's enemies to bolster his own forces. Still, it was a huge triumph given what he barely started with. The Spanish also brought a host of European diseases with them that many natives did not have immunities to. Millions died over the years because of the plagues that were brought to them, making it even easier for the Spanish to subjugate them and enforce their rule.
