The vertex of the parabola is minimum point (see your attachment) where the graph stops decreasing and begins to climb. Remembering the x = - b / 2a formula for the x-coordinate of the vertex, x = - (-2)/ (2*1) = 1. For values where a > 1, the function will increase. The open interval as shown on the attachment (a, inf) will become (1, inf) meaning a is greater than 1.
