what is a stereotype?

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Stereotypes are preconceived notions about people, places, or thing (most commonly people or groups of people). Stereotypes are developed from earlier experiences with whatever is being stereotyped and can create prejudices within an individual. For example, if every time I had ever eaten an apple it was sour, I would probably refused one if you offered it to me because I might have stereotyped all apples as sour and developed a prejudice against them because of my past experience with them and my notion that they are all the same.
