When reading? The author should have clarified that detail, and you pick up on the clarification (and anything else having to do with the topic) by close reading. And rereading as necessary.

It also might help to paraphrase the passage contain ing the detail that you want to clarify. Put it in your own words in a way that makes sense. If you can't keep reading the passage until you can. Also a lot of times not understanding the details comes from not understanding the basics of the subject. If there is terminology that is unfamiliar look it up and be sure you understand it. Any words or verbiage that is use be sure you understand it in the context in which it is used.
