Please, any help appreciated! :) Why is the long term use of antacids detrimental to acid-base balance???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The more antacids used, the less acidity there is. If you use antacids too much, there will not be a balance of acids and bases

thanks.. :) could you (or anyone) be a little more detailed. im a little confused on it. sorry.

Just to be simple here, lets say the pH level is very acidic. So you use an antacid to lower the acidity level. You want to use a reasonable amount so you get a balanced pH level. If you use too much, the pH level will start going towards the basic side. So the lont term use of antacids is detrimental to the acid-base balance

On a larger scale, if you use antacids too much, on many compounds, then these compounds will turn into bases and there will be more bases than acidic compounds.

awesome, thanks soo much. that totally clears it up. :)
