i think besides what exuras suggests, in studying biology depends very much on the subject you are learning. its not the same to prepare yourself for biochemistry than for zoology, botany, microbiology, phisiology...etc. consider as well how much you already know of the subject, if you are facing a subject for the very first time you really need to study hard, that is understand and memorize. nowadays people are not so much into memorization, but without it, the brain will keep only threads but not complete ideas. If you are already familiar with it, anyway, review and refresh your memory and take it from there.
The key: understanding, memory and long hours with a good book that helps you put your ideas in order. Without music, internet beside you. friends, cell phone....-). I learnt this the hard way, but now that you ask i sure hope it helps. good luck and dont panic.

Flash cards with pictures definition and the word. it is very helpful if you make them before the start of every chapter.
