A sieve is like a filter, it's like what the guys who panned for gold in California way back in the day used, I'm sure you've seen old Disney cartoons with this: they'd put a whole bunch of muck into a big filter and shake it like crazy to make the mud fall out to see if they had any gold in the muck. You pass material through a sieve so as to sort out things. Therefore: B. Separating soils by grain size.
