is this question a bit about using approximations or just simple adding?

anyways.... 8 in +9 in = 1 ft 5 inches. now this 1 foot gets added as a carry-over (remember the thing we studied in kindergarten?) to the foot addition.... so now feet add.----> (1+2+1) = 4 feet. and yards add up to 3. so your answer is 3 yds 4 ft 5 inches. SIMPLE METHOD: convert everything to inches, add up, and re-convert as desired.
