Do you think that it is an undeniable and may i say fundamental quality of man that when faced with extinction every alternative is preferable?
On a group or societal level, I would say that yes, this is undeniable. However, on the individual level I would disagree. There are individual situation where a single human would prefer extinction over a worse alternative. Just a few examples: A parent sacrificing their life for their child. Choosing suicide when faced with torture. Offering one's life for one's god.
I think Jagatuba pretty well answered your question, however, it is interesting to wonder whether or not this "fundamental quality" comes from genetics or experience (nature versus nurture.) The same question applies to the three exceptions listed above!
