5x + 3y = 8 2x + y = 1 -x + 0y = 5 -x = 5 x = -5 ; is this the substitution method or elimination method?

Actually, this is the elimination method. The bottom equation has been multiplied through by -3 and then the two equations were added together which eliminates the y variable completely. Substitution would look more like this: 5x+3(1-2x)=8...where the second equation was solved for y and then substituted into the first equation
