To complete the square , we take the middle term (which is 4x) , half the coefficient (we get 2) and square it (we get 4) x^2+4x+4 +2 now we can write it as factor (x^2+4x+4) +2 (x+2)^2 +2 now remember since you added extra 4 to the equation, to get back to original value , subtract it back (x+2)^2+2-4 (x+2)^2-2
