OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

Directrix (directrix):

Do you know right triangle trig?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We learned about it but i never understood

Directrix (directrix):

How is the cosine function of an angle defined in right triangle trig?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

... uhm lol. I'm not sure.. by the porportional side? o.o

Directrix (directrix):

Words such a opposite side, adjacent side, and hypotenuse will be in the ratio used. Does that sound familiar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it does

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here let me look at my notes and type down what i have written down tell me if i do this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cos = Adjacent/hypotonuse

Directrix (directrix):

Cosine of which angle in this case? Look at the diagram to determine that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 24 degree angle?

Directrix (directrix):

Yes. Cos (24) = ?/x What goes in the numerator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos (24) = 11/x?

Directrix (directrix):

Yes. Cosine of an angle is the ratio of the adjacent leg to the hypotenuse. So, cos 24 = 11/x What is the value of cosine of 24 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure how to put that into my calculator :c

Directrix (directrix):

You can go to the Google home page and enter "cosine of 24 degrees" and the value will be shown.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.913545458

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the answer?

Directrix (directrix):

No

Directrix (directrix):

0.913545458 = 11/x. Do you know how to solve that for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uh hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 0.08304959

Directrix (directrix):

I don't think so. 0.913545458 = 11/x 0.913545458 / 1 = 11 / x Cross multiply and 0.913545458 x = 11 x =

Directrix (directrix):

Divide 11 by ..... what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhmm 0.913545458

Directrix (directrix):

and the result is the value of x. What is x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so equals 12.04099905885581

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = that lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's that rounded?

Directrix (directrix):

That is correct. The hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle. That is a big clue that your first answer was wrong.

Directrix (directrix):

Rounded to how many places?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow, thanks for the help.. i can't possibly thank you enough. You're a huge help! thanks for taking the time to answer and help me c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to the nearest tenth

Directrix (directrix):

For the nearest tenth, go to one place farther. If the digit in the hundredths slot is 5 or more round up the digit in the tenths slot. So what do you think the result will be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12.040?

Directrix (directrix):

12.04 is what we are working with

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooh so its 12.04.. x = 12.04?

Directrix (directrix):

0 is in the tenths slot.

Directrix (directrix):

Is the digit in the hundredths slot equal to 5 or more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its not

Directrix (directrix):

Then, to the nearest tenth, the answer is 12.0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 12.0?

Directrix (directrix):

Yes, it does to the nearest tenth

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much for the help. really. thank you!!!!! you deserve 120124125 medals lol.

Directrix (directrix):

Glad to help
