Is it necessary to mention a source's profession when introducing or citing them additionally within the body of an essay (e.g. use the word "Attorney" in front of John Smith's name if he is a lawyer)?

Yes it is necessary in most papers however, it is only necessary if your professor deems it so.

In my own opinion, I feel that naming the source's profession gives the source higher credibility. Your reader doesn't care what John Smith knows about the subject. Who is John Smith? But if they see that he is an attorney, they will understand that he DOES know what he is talking about.
