a salesman earned $900 last week. He has a retainer of $270 and earns a commision of 12% of sales over $2000. Find the value of sales.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let s=sales Let c=commision. The retainer + commision equals the salesman's income of $900. So you have $270 + c = $900 c=$900-$270 Which gives us a commision of $630. The commission of $630 equals 12% of sales over $2,000. So we have .12(s-2000)=$630 Which gives us .12s-$240=$630 This becomes .12s=$870 So the total sales are $870/.12 or $7,250
