If you're talking about the river valley civilizations all the way back in the Foundations era, it would be because while most/all of the civilizations developed in the fertile crescent (or Egypt) (google if you don't know), China was far far away, separated by vast oceans, arid deserts, and tall mountains, all of which, at that time, proved hard to overcome.

Mainly because of their military and the Great Wall which kept MOST outsiders from entering China, so that made China become independent, more or less.
