Carbohydrates are important molecules for a number of reasons. Heena is right: top on the list is energy storeage and metabolism; however, they also play important structural roles in macromolecules (all those ribose and deoxyribose bases in DNA and RNA), are post translationally bonded to proteins and function in intracellular protein and vesicle trafficking and serve as markers on the surfaces of cells.
