OpenStudy (anonymous):

when combining like terms what do you do with a letter by itself?? example -6y + 6 - 4 + 2 + y - 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do i do with the y?

OpenStudy (hoblos):

the coeffitient of the letter is 1

OpenStudy (hoblos):

so y=1y

OpenStudy (amistre64):

"combining like terms" is really just applying the UNdistributive property and factoring out a greatest common factor

OpenStudy (amistre64):

commute all terms with a common factor and associate them into one group -6y + 6 - 4 + 2 + y - 4 ( -6y+y) + (6 - 4 + 2 - 4) factor out the greatest common factor of "y" y(-6+1) + (6 - 4 + 2 - 4) and thats pretty much it
