The pH scale measures the strength of acids and bases. Its formula is pH = –log(H +) where H + is the concentration of hydrogen ions. A substance with a lower pH is more acidic. The pH of normal rain water is somewhere between 5.0 and 5.6. The pH of acid rain falling in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is 4.7. The rain in the park is how many times as acidic as normal rain water? Give a range for your answer: “Between ? and ? times as acidic.”
