In a sample of pure carbon, some of the atoms have more neutrons than others. This shows that carbon exists in several different ions compounds isotopes

ions change polarity and nuetrons are nuetrual; so it aint ion

isotopes are the same elements with different weights; and since nuetrons add or subtract weight .... thats my bet
