I can only help with western names, but here goes:
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph is his first name (also called the given name)
Waldo is his middle name (for women it is sometimes a maiden name)
Emerson is his last name (also called the surname)

More than you wanted to know:
When Western women marry, they sometimes take their husband's last name. When they do, their surname becomes the middle name, also known as their maiden name.
Lisa Smith Brown marries William Allan Roberts and becomes Lisa Brown Roberts
