The individual triangular pieces interlock to form squares. She wants the area of the squares to be 9 square centimeters. Approximately, what is the length of the hypotenuse of one of the triangular pieces?

3 times square root of 2 or 4.24 approx. If the area of the square is 9, then each side is 3. A diagnonal of a square forms 2 45-45-90 triangles. The hypotenuse is square root 2 times a leg.
