All heterotrophic organisms must obtain food by eating other organisms. Plants, or autotrophs, can absorb nutrients and make organic tissues out of it. Protists are an interesting catagory because some (plant like) protists can live on just nutrients whereas others (animal like) need to eat other organisms to survive.
