A farmer with 6000 meters of fencing wants to enclose a rectangular plot that borders a river, what is the largest area that can be enclosed?

The rectangular plot that gives the greatest area is a square. If the river can be considered to be one side of the fence, then you can divide the 6000 meters of fence between the three remaining sides. You can then multiply 2 sides together to get your total area.
