How do you guys do well in writing English essays?
What is your thought process? How do you guys manage to get 80s+ on essays? Can any of you please explain what you do before and after you have finished writing your essays for Hamlet, and other plays, short stories, articles, etc.? I'm terrible at writing essays and I would like to know any tips, and advises. Thank you for taking the time to answering my questions! :)
Personally, I think a good structure is important (Intro paragraph, 2-4 paragraphs(on discussion) and then a conclusion). A good variety of vocabulary and try varying sentence structure. Watch out for spellings grammar and punctuation. I also before writing the essay make a short list of things i will write about , so you want to plan it as well and have nice ideas, at the end you might want to read through it just to see if it flows all the way through.
Milliex51, it takes time. Time and a good teacher. You have to learn, first of all, to read closely and to analyze the text. That takes time -- the more you learn, the more you can bring to bear on your next assignments. You need to build up a critical awareness of the sorts of issues that lit deals with, and how it does it. At the same time, you have to learn how to structure your thought, from individual sentences to collections of sentences in paragraphs to collections of paragraphs that together form a coherent essay. None of this comes quickly or easily to most of us. Do you read a lot? Reading widely helps. There's something about processing text as you read that helps you feel more natural about producing text yourself to be read.
