What is the function of weighting function?

When doing something like adding, integrating or averaging over many elements in a set, a weighting function increases the influence of some elements in that set on the output and decreases the influence of others.

For example, if you were doing linear least squares to find a line of best fit for some data but some of the data were from a sensor you knew to be faulty, you could apply a weighting function to the entire set such that the faulty data affected the out come of the regression less than the other data.
